Raising a child is hard.
Raising a bilingual child overseas is even harder!
Raising a child can be seriously challenging! Caring for a baby is both physically and mentally demanding. It’s hard enough to do in one language. How is it possible to add learning a second language onto all of the other responsibilities of being a parent?
These are the exact same questions I was asking myself twenty years ago as a young father and husband to a Japanese wife. “I’m in Japan, but I want to raise my daughter to speak both Japanese and English. How can I do this?”
And for some families who are here in Japan for work you might be asking yourself, "How can I improve my child's English and academic skills level so they can smoothly re-enter the school system in my home country?"
At the time it seemed overwhelming. But I studied and researched day and night and eventually created a education plan that allowed my daughter to be raised fully bilingual. I’m here to tell you, it’s a lot of work, but the experiences of raising a child overseas and raising a bilingual child can be some most rewarding choices that you can make.
