We work on three basic skills as our core skills block daily: alphabet/phonics, numbers, and colors. During our daily core skills block we will use books, games, songs, and manipulatives to help enhance the learning process. Students will learn shape and number recognition as well color awareness. Basic number skills will be taught for numbers 1-20.
We have weekly themes that cover a large variety of subjects. These themes include: body parts, emotions, family, clothes, school, in the home, food, fruit, vegetables, nature, weather, farm animals, ocean animals, zoo animals, transportation, and shapes. In addition to these themes we also have themes that will be done at least once during the year. Seasons and hy-giene are examples of such themes. For each of these themes we have a set of corresponding vocabulary, images, songs, and crafts to help the children to be able to remember them.
Social skills for preschoolers are dependent on three different abilities; emotional self-control, empathy, and verbal communi-cation. At Hisaya International Preschool we base our social skills set on these three areas, helping to guide the children to become socially competent and able to flourish in social settings.
Throughout the year we will be using different texts to compliment the learning we are doing in the classroom. In addition to the following texts we will also be using worksheets from various educational websites.

A typical Caterpillar day:
|| Morning free play: important for helping develop relationships and allowing the children to pick up and learn to use language creatively and fluently (together with Butterflies and Porcupines).
|| Morning circle time: We learn how to answer basic questions about ourselves, like our name and age and favor-ite things. We also learn about the things around us like colors, days of the week, months of the year and how to talk about the weather.
Special Study time: this could be a story or a little bit of time working together on an iPad game.
|| Worksheet time: we use this time to practice proper grip of crayons and pencils and create an interest in letter-ing. We also work on number, shape and color recognition. (See download page for workbook contents.)
|| Park time: together with Butterflies and Porcupines.
|| Afternoon free play: This is a time when the kids like to use the language and concepts they have learned in class to talk to each other in the context of play. Imagination play and cooperative play are common at this time. This is also a time when the students work on their social skills and manners. (Together with Butterflies and Porcupines.)
|| Theme and Craft: This is when we discuss our weekly theme and use craft to give the children hands on interaction with the concepts.
